Home Heating Systems

Home heating systems are an important requirement for people living in very cold places.  Heating system maintains temperature at the desired level by using thermal energy. It uses oil/coal, gas and electricity for the actual warm up procedure.  Once you decide on a required temperature of the room then you need to control the switch, which is known as thermostat for controlling the temperature. A furnace takes air from the room/ house and the heat producer in the system produces the heat, which is finally redirected in the room through ducts.

There can be two ways of heating a room.  One is local heating where only certain portion of the room would be heated. A central Home Heating System can be used for heating a whole building.  All the rooms of the building will be using one single system. For office or hotels, you can use central heating system.

There are different types of home heating systems.

Floor heating

In this system, electric wires are installed below the carpet or on the ceiling and heat passes thru these wires.

Electric Heat Pump

Electric heat pump will transfer heat from one place to another.  It can act like an air cooler in warm weather. It picks up the warmth from the air outside where the temperature is always constant. These are suitable for mild winter and not severe winter.

Space heaters

Portable space heaters are easy to carry from one room to another.  They are fuelled by gas or kerosene. They can be used for heating a particular room and not the whole house.

Baseboard home heating system

These are the long metal boards, which are based on electrical elements. All these elements have its own control.

Hydronic home heating system

In this system, the tubes will be used and all the tubes will have flow of hot water, which will keep temperature warm.

Forced air heating system

This system brings the heated air blown by a fan through many ducts.  The fan forces air to enter into the room.  It distributes heat evenly in the room.

It is quite normal that if you are using any of these systems then your electricity bill for the month is going to be very high.  Few things which you need to remember while using home heating systems, which can help you, reduce the electricity bill and enjoy the benefit of home heating systems are:

• Checking all types of possible leakage like heat escaping through windows or the chimney.
• Cleaning your furnace filters every month.
• Have an energy star thermostat.
